Minecraft: Flavour of the month!

One of the nice things about Minecraft is the ability to switch in new texture packs to breathe new life into the world you inhabit. For months now I’ve used the JohnSmith Texture Pack, which retained the “feel” of the original textures while imbuing them with greater detail.

The Great Hall

Tonight I was directed to the Sphax PureDBCraftx128 texture pack, which gives everything in Minecraft a distinct cel-shaded style that feels like something out of a comic book. The picture doesn’t really do it justice, but suffice to say it looks amazing in-game.

Both packs are excellent, it’s really just a matter of what kind of “flavour” you want the world to have. Ah, the joys of the modding community!

Parkour Graffiti Mode

I came across this in my daily trawl through Kotaku. I have to be honest, it made me a little nostalgic for the actual Tony Hawk games that I used to play years ago. Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 and 3 were easy favorites of mine and to see the graffiti multiplayer mode recreated with parkour instead was a nice twist.

Minecraft: Getting Constructive

So I’ve recently started playing on a friend’s personal Minecraft server. I set out from the starting area, traveling some distance until I reached a chunk of land situated in the middle of a lake. From there I just started building, routinely stopping to mine the necessary resources. The video that follows shows off all my recent constructions. Also featured are brief glimpses at couple of my friend’s efforts, namely the wartorn tower and an actual skull fortress carved into the mountainside. Check it out!

My friend also used an external application to create a map of the world running on his server. The sheer scale that a Minecraft world can take is utterly mind-boggling. To give you some sense of the true scale, this picture only represents around 5% of the full picture (which was much too large to put up). Scarier still is that this world will only continue to grow!

Dubstep As Dance

So this is something I found both impressive and a bit unnerving. Some of the moves on display in this video seem like they should be impossible, and yet this fellow pulls it all off rather convincingly. I can hardly imagine the amount of physical conditioning this kind of dance requires. It’s a truly fascinating display of agility and clever choreography.

You know what really grinds my gears?

Gears of War 2

So I may be a bit behind by almost three years here, but I recently started blasting through Gears of War 2 for the Xbox 360. I played the first on my PC a few years back and I particularly enjoyed it, encountering none of the bugs that seem to have plagued my fellow PC gaming brethren. I had been disappointed at Epic’s decision not to release the sequel on the PC, and at that time I had no interest in getting an Xbox 360 just for one game. Time went on and after the 360 got its redesign and matching price cut last year, I decided to finally grab one to see what the fuss was all about. Read the rest of this entry »
